Resolutions. Even if you say you do not make resolutions, lurking in your massive mind, is something you would like to Do MORE of , LESS of, or NOT AT ALL.

If that is not true, please type in the letters WTH so I know you are a human.

For the rest of us, let’s start with Resolutions in the category “NOT AT ALL."

In “NOT AT ALL” we have: “sneaking cigarettes, cheating with a golf-pro, telling the media you have lost your child in a balloon!”….. or small insignificant things like…eating whole cakes, hiding credit card bills……eating anything because it is free or sweet.

Those are all good things, not to do.

So you might say to yourself: I will not eat free candy. I will not smoke another cigarette. I will not cheat. Your mind hears..cheat..candy…cigarettes.

You are doomed. Sorry!

Here is the 1 in Resolutions 101: 1. Do not mention what you are escaping.

Spinning works wonders for politicians, the tobacco industry, the makers of partially hydrogenated oil, corn syrup, and now you!

You want your internal press release to pull your emotional strings in the right direction.

For stop smoking try: I love smelling kissable.

If you are cheating, try this: I love looking at myself in the mirror and saying, “Sure honey, my cell phone is your cell phone and here is a list of all my email accounts with passwords.”

And for parents with big balloons in the back yard, “I recognize that my children are smart competent human beings whom I love and respect.”

LESS is a zero in 101. LESS is ambiguous. Less confuses all of us. When the mind is confused, it goes back to what it knows. That’s right, more smoking, more cheating, and spurious calls to the news.

Less demands specific directions. After the third drink, I will taste onions in my mouth and remember that I have to work and I love my clear driving record.

After one piece of cake, I will immediately begin to obsess and make myself so miserable that at the sight of cake I will want to add icing, box it up, and send it to ex-husband’s new wife.

The next resolution category is…..DO MORE. If, at the sound of “DO MORE!” you had a reaction and it did not include jumping up with enthusiasm, you may want to keep reading.

You could DO MORE to save more for retirement; use the gym membership you are paying for. Yes, you should do more of those things and more of many more things.

Do MORE is a heavy freight train, heading down hill, carrying the guilty Woulda! Shoulda! Couldas!

Officially, we do not have enough qualified priests to absolve all the guilt from not doing enough! We have to give DO MORE a zero too.

I know that last zero makes this Resolution 1001. But if I mentioned that in the title, you would not be reading this. I am just saying…….

The final 1 in Resolutions 101: the mind likes benefits. Stuff your resolutions with specific directions and benefits.

I weigh (insert # here) and feel like a tiger..tigress?

I can smell fresh air, flowers, perfume. I love having a great sense of smell.

The more veggies I eat the better I feel!

Resolutions, like affirmations are statements of truth in advance.

If, when writing your resolution with benefits, you run into a problem like this; I love my kissable breath, but I really don’t want to kiss the person I think I am supposed to kiss!!

CALL ME IMMEDIATELY!

Sometimes you need a little help figuring out just where to start.

WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST IN 2010!

Lisa Crunick

Helping You Change Your Mind!

206-941-1287

When my growing girls flip flopped between the comfort of playing with dolls and then reaching out to try on lipstick, my view was compassionate amusement.

Now I am the one flip flopping and I am not feeling particularly compassionate, or amused.

Today I am flat out blue. One of those girls is leaving home to start a life in Washington, DC.

She is determined, lovely, eloquent and brave enough to have made the decision without having a job. All this while friends have been telling her she was foolish.

Well everyone has their opinion, what I know is that we respect people who take chances, go ahead, and believe that it will work out, and it has; and all my pride is not banishing the blue.

So why am I so blue? This daughter has not been in the house for more than a month at a time for the past four years. Recently graduated from college, she has been home for five weeks, just the two of us, and the dog and the cat.

I have more time now. I am not doing the drive bys (this is where you are in such a hurry to get to your appointment, you leave your kid somewhere and then call on the cell phone to make sure they got in). Yes, I was often a crazed single-parent.

For five weeks I have enjoyed folding her laundry, feeding her, hearing about her day. I like all of that, but seriously. I need to dig deeper. Do I feel guilty? Do we parents ever do enough? Am I afraid I won't have enough going on when she is gone? (If you know me, you are laughing here).

I did not cry when either daughter went to kindergarten or college, and I always make jokes about the way mother eagles push their young ones out of the nest and they either make it or Not! Today I cried after I dropped her off at work.

This blue is another curtain closing on my role as Mom. It is another nail in the passing of youth. I can deny the unease of touching my toes, by not trying, but it is impossible to deny that the flipping between busy-Mom and free-Mom is ending.

Does this make me a crone? I love crones, but I am not ready to be one; the title is still for other people. I love being a Mom.

To make matters more intense, I have been sorting family pictures.

Part of this transition is a craving for order. The feng shui consultant has come and gone, and I have projects. I want to enter the next phase peacefully and free of any clutter.

Whew, I do feel better. It is ok to flip flop between happy, sad, and proud.

I did the best I could do, and eagle moms are smart, so out you go girl! Tomorrow, I am buying all of the girls in my family new lipstick!

My friend used to joke, ” What’s the big deal about a free range chicken? You are going to kill it anyway!”

Last weekend, during a mother-daughter viewing of Food Inc, a woman farmer walks into her chicken house which is STUFFED with chickens. She picks out the dead ones, “These chickens are bred to have big breasts. They cannot move and they are standing in feces.”

She lost her contract with because she allowed her chicken jail to be filmed.

WTH The sight of a top heavy chicken, who can’t walk, pumped up with antibiotics, brought out my rebellious side. A chicken breast is not meant to be the size of a whole chicken. I will not buy those chickens.

We have a lot of power. What we ask for in the marketplace we will get.

Playing the game is about a month of perceiving presents as symbols of good things to come as other things fall apart.

I love to play games with perspective.

At the beginning of February, I decided to counter all the gloom and doom reports by perceiving every present I received, as a symbol of good things to come.

Boy, did I get tested. It took three service calls to convince my furnace that it wasn't an air conditioner. With that out of the way, I discovered that my name and some Chinese characters clicked through to some pretty disgusting pornography. Wow. Do I have to call that a present?

Got that out of the way, and my laptop crashed. I immediately carried my little baby out the door, to the local Tech guy, who immediately recognized me. Two hundred dollars later, I was back in the saddle.

Three days later, on a Sunday afternoon, someone broke into my home and stole my laptop off of my dining room table. Keep on playing.

So, let's get to the presents. I got so many in February, it is crazy….wonderfully crazy. My dear friend of many years brought me a beautiful box from Vietnam. We have years of shared memories, but presents…..

I returned from lunch and outside my door was a beautiful bouquet from a colleague, left as a thank you, and a complete surprise.

A client sent me a text: I have presents for you: she brought me a beautiful, pashmina scarf, and earrings. Really, my birthday is not in February.

Next came the unexpected money.

Then I received a case of red grapefruit mixed with honey tangerines and blood oranges. Now this is how to make the juicer in me happy!

An old friend called, out of the blue, and offered right on buying advice for a new laptop.

My nineteen year old daughter slipped into my car and handed me a paper Valentine she had made for me with the kindergartners in her life. She reported they asked her incredulously, "YOU have a MOM?".

There is more, there is always more……………………… My life is just like yours. Stuff is happening all of the time.

Now that it has been proven, yes proven, that your thoughts change your brain, you, we, all of us have no reason not to get busy training our thoughts.

I know I just said a MINDFUL, and I am bursting to share everything I have learned in the last few days, but it is going to have to wait.

For now I am passing on a recipe for getting excited about food that is carotene rich, really good for your brain, and so delicious. Moroccan Stew

After the snow…after the sledding….after the holidays…after the wonderful company…after all of the baking…..after the homemade ravioli with creamy saffron sauce that made me utter, "OH, I want to leave this world with olive oil drooling down."

Yeah, I said that. It was all so much fun, but now I am ready for the New Year. I want all of the decorations gone…………..piles gone……..and what is in my refrigerator?????

It is time to dust off the juicer!!! As I go through the house with a BIG Box asking the question, "Do I love this?" If the answer is NO. Out it goes.

I want to be surrounded with what I really like. Think about it, do you want to take care of STUFF you aren't so crazy about?? Well, maybe you do. That's OK.

The dog and cat are hiding from me. They are in luck. Goodwill does not take animals. Actually, I really, really like them, well actually, I like one of them more than the other one, but I like them both enough. They can stay.

As the old goes out, the new comes in. The sales have been incredible and I want to fill the coffers of the retailers I like. Even the ones I am not so crazy about, did nothing to deserve being in a city, where the average person could not "just go" shopping for almost two weeks. AAAHH………So it is new socks..new foundations….new turtlenecks….new…. I don't have to tell you everything!!!!!

And as I am scurrying and fussing, I remember to be grateful I am not living in a tent, or in Kansas in another era in a sod hut.I am making a special pile for Tent City. In fact, one of my dear clients is very involved with Tent City, which, as you may or may not know, is for the homeless, and is perpetually homeless.

What does not change so much is what is needed. I have a nice pile of things for Tent City at my office in Fremont and I will KEEP this pile going until after the inauguration.

Following is a list of what would be appreciated. Encampment Needs: – non-perishable food – hand sanitizer – dish detergent – garbage bags – paper plates, plastic utensils – toilet paper – batteries – - A, AA, AAA, C, D – Vitamin C, First Aid Kit – Warm Clothing If you are really nice, I will come pick it up or you can drop it at the office. Just call me first, 206-941-1287.

Be well as you sort through Your STUFF, and decide what is enough is enough is enough!!

It is playing downtown at the Cinerama. Don't miss it! There is only one more week!!!

I want to talk to you about HAL. HAL is the 9000 series computer who has never made a mistake. He knows everything and at least acts like he has emotions.

The odyssey is dependent on him and his "acting out" drives part of the story.

There is a scene that is so perfect for hypnosis. One of the astronauts goes into HAL's huge mainframe. The screen is red and he begins unscrewing the memory slots, one by one.

HAL says, "I am losing my mind, I can feel it."

When I was very young, I found the neighbor's custom of having black beans and pirogies on New Year's Eve fascinating.

Many cultures regard the new year as an auspicious time for new beginnings. The Roman god Janus had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking back. We want to usher in good luck, whether it is by eating beans, cleaning the hearth as ancient Brtions did, or simply raising our glasses for a toast, we all like the idea of a fresh start.

Thais have a relatively new tradition of visiting nine temples to usher in the new year.

Walailak Songsiri, a local anthropologist surmised in the local paper that Thais, while enjoying many modern conveniences, are seeking more spirituality and that visiting nine temples in a day, gives the illusion of getting the job done, but wouldn't it better to slow down and really be with one's own thoughts at one temple?

Americans are not alone in wanting it all, now.

Each temple serves a unique purpose, Wat Pho is noted for giving happiness and serenity, while Wat Arun represents prosperity, another one is for victory, and on it goes. The temples are really busy, too busy for enjoyment, according to the temple keepers.

Here, the newspaper had a full page on Horoscopes for 2008. I didn't see a word about dieting or gyms, but lots of information on what the nightclubs were offering.

Not a word on New Year's resolutions. How refreshing. See you in the New Year!
